The Dreamcast is still living in Japan 5 years after it’s release there. The Dreamcast is now to shooting fans what the Neo Geo is to beat’em up fans. Milestone have brought Dreamcast owners their Naomi arcade game Chaos Field before they port it to Game Cube. Just goes to show that there’s still love for the Dreamcast from Japanese software houses.
So Chaos Filed is another shooter for Dreamcast but what makes it worth buying if you already own the last lot such as Shikigami No Shiro II, Psyvariar II or Boarder Down? Well, Chaos Field is quite different than the before mentioned simply because it doesn’t actually have any stages as so to speak. Of course there are stages but all they consist of is one or two “Boss” type ships. There’s no actual little ships to blow up through the level. It’s probably best described as Ikaruga with only the bosses. You’d expect this to be quite dull but in fact it’s quite a refreshing change to the normal do a level than battle a boss formula.
Graphically Chaos Field isn’t the most impressive but it’s still very nice. The problem is that backgrounds are quite bland but since most of your concentration is on the masses of bullets flying your way it’s not that much of a problem. The enemy ships on the other hand look very nice indeed. Chaos Field's audio is also quite nice with fitting sound effect and pumping music sort of like what Psyvariar II has.
So, Chaos Filed looks good, sounds good, has a unique level layout but how does it play? Like a dream I’d say. At first the controls do seem a bit confusing but give it 10 minutes and you’ll feel as if you’ve been playing this all your life. There is the standard shoot, lock on and shield type attack but what is interesting is the plasma sword. This sweeps in front of your craft whipping clean many of the bullets heading your way. The only downer is that you can’t actually fire when you use this but you can use it to attack enemies. Makes me wonder if they ripped this idea from Radiant Silvergun. Another cool feature is the Chaos button. Press this and you enter “Chaos Mode” which turns the screen a shade of red and fills it up full of bullets. Looks really pretty but sure hard to play.
Even if you own all of the later Dreamcast shooters I still recommend you to buy this one. You won’t be disappointed!
